sold my FT950. fancied some hi band stuff. took some time to choose. vr5000 .. ar8600 ???? even considered the r8500 icom. in the end i decided to give the AR8600 a try. well i didnt buy it for longwave. in the manual it doesnt say much except .. its not guaranteed. and a review online had the same comment. ---- well heres my test. its not a special radio. just one bought from a local shop off the shelf. i think its great. and the hi bands??? fantastic. it stands up to my stringent tests from past experiences. airband vhf is very good. 200mhz is good. pmr uhf and even 850mhz where ive listened to our headphone fqy,s the audio is rounded and solid. no nasty edgy sharp sounding. AM bands are very pleasant to listen to. oh .. one thing i didnt like ... the bandscope. id rather a fast tune button.
